Hyperlinks to Word or Excel Files

I have hyperlinks on my site to word and excel files (also on my site).
Because I have Word and Excel on my PC, they open in the browser window.
How can I change this so that they do not open and the usual download window
opens and gives the surfer the choice to either save or open the file.
Thanks.
 
You would have to make them a zip file or place a note telling the user to
right click and save, etc.
