Hyperlink to a folder opens incorrect folder view

Kevin

I'm using using WindowsXP and running FP 2000. The
Website is stored on a harddrive and served by Frontpage
2000 through a LAN. Various web pages have Hyperlinks to
several folders that contain various types of files.
ie: .gif, .jpg, .pdf, .tiff, .doc, etc.

Here's the problem. I'd like the .gif & .jpg folders to
open in THUMBNAIL view when accessing them by hyperlink.
I'd like the other folders to open in ICON view. So far
there has been mixed success. Using Windows Explorer I've
changed the folder view of each respectively. They open
properly in Windows Explorer but not when accessing them
by hyperlink. I've been searching for a relevant topic in
this forum and in the knowledge base but to no avial.

Can anyone help to identify why this is happening and
offer a solution to fix it?

Thanks,

Kevin

That is Windows Explorer (desktop) function, not a Browser (web) function.

You need to access the folders using the windows shell and file sharing.

The link is opening a desktop folder in a frame window.
Some are opening in Thumbnail view yet others do not.
Some are opening in Icon view, others are opening in Tile
view. There is no rhyme or reason as to why or how this
occurs.

But you are trying to viewing a folder on your HD via a browser, which is not the same as view a
folder via on the desktop via Windows Explorer.

This question really belongs in a Windows or IE newsgroup, as it is not FrontPage related, as there
are not HTML tag to control this.

"windows shell & file sharing" Can this be accomplished
by calling up a windows shell via hyperlink through the
website?

I've been sucessfully using the unpublished website for
over a year. Hyperlinking to a Windows Folder is direct
vs. layers of folder surfing. The files within can be
manipulated & moved between files w/out error.

I am tweaking some things since upgrading to XP. By using
Window's Explorer/View command I can select an
alternate "default" view. By hyperlink within the website
some folders consistently open in the alternate "default"
view. A few folders, however, will only open in Tile view
even though it opens in the alternate view in Windows
Explorer.

There has to be a reason for this action. It would seem
that the folder should still get it's "view" settings from
the same source. Perhaps there 2 copies of a file in the
background. ie: desktop.ini file or some other file hidden
in the background I'll check that out now.

Thanks,

Kevin

Think of it this way.
In computer terms you are dealing with 2 domains, 1 domain being Windows Explorer, the other domain
being the browser.

When you link to a file / folder using the browser domain the machine thinks of it as an html
document and opens it in a browser window, and the browser window will *not* have the functionality
of the windows shell aka Windows Explorer. This is done for security reasons to prevent what is
called cross domain scripting. Cross domain scripting was disabled with the latest security update
to Internet Explorer.

You used to be able to open a folder from an html document using href="file://c:/foldername" That
capability no longer exists.
