Hyperlink Change to Relative Path on Save?

I have a problem with hyperlinks in Word2002. I am trying
to link to documents on a network, and want to use
absolute paths. I can "point" the hyperlink to the
document and test it fine, with the address showing up as
an absolute path (\\server\folder1\folder2\doc.doc), but
when I save the document the link changes to a relative
path (../../../ etc)

Anyone experience this behavior before, or know a
workaround? Thanks very much.

I was Googling to find an answer to this problem too. I read this but no one posted an answer in years. So I will do it since I found the answer in Microsoft's own website.

You have set your Microsoft Office Options to "update links on save"

On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the General tab.
Click Web options.
Click Files tab.
Uncheck Update Links on Save.

I don't know why they have that feature anyway.
