MS WORD changes hyperlink information after I save and exit.

I have a general Word Document saved on my PC that is full of hyperlinks to
documents saved across the network.
The issue is that now for some reason when I edit a hyperlink, save and
close, the next time I open to use the link, it will change the Link.
For example, Instead of the path reading...

" File:///\\folder\folder\document.doc " a path that would work

It will read...

" ../../../../folder/folder/document.doc " and provide a msg saying check
your path.

Has anyone uncounted this issue before? Know how to solve?

The main setting that is likely to affect this is

Word Tools->Options->General->Web options->Files->Update links on save

or in Word 2007

Office Button->Word Options->Advanced->Web options (near the bottom of the
page)->Files->Update links on save.

This option may look as if it should only apply to documents you save as
HTML, but in fact it applies to .doc etc. as well.
