How do I install hyper-threading on my new computer. It
did not come installed and my manual states that it
improves computer performance? I need to get an update
from the software manufacturer? How?

Thank you

Ask the folks who sold you the computer?

You *NEED* to get an update or *WANT* to get an update? NOT the same thing.

Hyperthreading is a function of the motherboard and CPU.
When you install a CPU that supports hyperthreading on a
mobo that supports it and then install XP (or reinstall) the
install program will identify the mobo/CPU as supporting and
will install the proper drivers.

The BIOS also has to be set.

How do you get around having to re-install XP to get Hyper Threading to work?
I already installed Service Pack 1, twice, in hoping it would turn on HT, but when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del it still only shows 1
cpu in the usuage tracking.
However, I look in Device Manager under Processor and it shows 2 processors.
That would seem to indicate that XP knows I have a Hyper Threading CPU and Motherboard, and yes I did enable it in the bios, but XP Kernel is not making use of it.

I upgraded, so it is not a fresh install of XP, but I am really nervous to even attempt to re-install XP.
Will the Repair function perform the same result? I may be willing to try that.

Serious replies can send me an email reply.

Hi Ken,

In the Windows Task Manager make sure that under: View | CPU History, 'One
Graph per CPU' is checked instead of 'One Graph, All CPUs'

That's all I can think of. If Device Manager shows two processors I think
it's safe to assume Windows is utilising HT. There's def. no reason as far
as I can see to reinstall Windows.

Hope this helps :)
