Hum In Speakers

L

Larry(LJL269)

I just installed a DVD player and when I played a movie I
could not hear the conversations because of constant hum in
the background. My audio runs out of the my PC and into my
stereo amplifier and speakers. So I replaced my PC with a
tape deck and the hum vanished so the problem is definitely
in my PC.

When I installed the DVD player, I only connected the power
line and the IDE cable. The third connection that runs from
the DVD player to the motherboard was not made.

Your help is MUCH appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advise given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

Disable items in volume control like "Aux In, Aux Out, Line Out, etc
etc. This is more then likely the problem, otherwise, we need to know
more about your audio.

The 3rd cable is an audio line connection. Hook it up to the CD Input or
AUX Input on the motherboard/soundcard. Open the mixer app and adjust
the levels there and mute or turn down unused inputs. You probably have
the AUX or CD input turned way up but there's nothing connected, hence
the hum.

You may have a ground loop. Trying plugging the PC into the same outlet as
the stereo.

Greetings Steve & thank you for your response.

Connection that came with DVD fit Analog Audio on DVD to 1
of 2 CD-ROM Audio-In headers on moboard but no improvement.
Hum is louder than voices in movie.

I'm using onboard C-Media sound. I do have a cheap PCI sound
card that I may install but 1st I'm trying some sensitivity
experiments like games all play ok, mic works & plays ok in
voice recognition, alarms in Calender app ok,...

Hum occurs with nothing playing & with DVD in Nero, WMedia,
or Power DVD. Ditto 4 CDs.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.

Thanks- bye- Larry

Greetings Jason & thank you for your response. I checked
MUTE on all but WAVE column in Advanced Sounds with no
effect.

Try re-orienting all the cables in the case as far away from the sound
chip and sound inputs as you can. Check that all connections are snug.
Mute all inputs except the CDROM audio input for the DVD drive if you
haven't already. If the audio cable from DVD to sound input is
non-shielded replace it with a shielded one. If you can, put the DVD
drive in another PC and see if the problem moves with it.

You might also search for an updated soundcard driver if you haven't
already.

try using a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter to break any ground loops. It sure
sounds like a ground loop.
Use it one at a time on the DVD player, the computer, and then the stereo.
IF nothing happens you can be sure its not a ground loop and move on to
other causes.
