HTTPS / SSL Broken

Hi,

Just had a call from a relative who's HTTPS / SSL is broken on their
computer. I remote accessed in and had a play and it's really wierd. I
can't see how it has happened, but it's either a result of some nasty malware
or it's a corruption.

Normal internet access over http is fine, but any access to https:// sites
fails with page not found.

This happens in both IE7 (latest patched version) and Firefox (V2) so it
isn't IE specific.

Anyone any suggestions beyond rebuilding the windows distro?

I've not see this before and google has let me down so far.

First scan for malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Then Make them run Disk CleanUp on the Drive to clean the junk.
Open a Run Command and type in these DLLs to re-register them:

regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
netsh winsock reset

"The Page Cannot Be Displayed" Error Message on a Secure Web Site
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303807

Be sure the TLS and SSL2.0 and SSL 3.0 check boxes checked under Advaced tab
on the IE properties under security Option:
Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .
[&] Security
[ ] Use SSL2.0
[ ] Use SSL 3.0
[ ] Use TLS1.0
HTH.
Let us know.

Thanks, followed all those instructions, but didn`t sort it.

Things that I should point out:

1. the regsvr on the initpki took a very long time to complete, the other
regsvrs were quick
2. the ie settings and registry are fine
3. the ad clean didn`t find anything

Still no HTTPS :-)

A Telnet <ipaddress> 443 doesn`t connect?

Thanks !

Okay, next to these steps then:
1- Locate the Hosts File in this path(be sure it is the Hosts file not the
one with the extension *.SAM* leave this as is):
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc = look in the Right Pane/Window and locate
the Hosts file and rename it to Hostsold ( you can open it and see if there
are any entries for websites remove it) and save the file and close it reboot
the machine and try the HTTPS://
Your Hosts file will
looks like this:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # Source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # Client Host
127.0.0.1 LocalHost
------------------------------------------
Remove all other References other than those above.

2- Delete the index.dat which locate in here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Nass\Cookies\index
C:\Documents and settings\Nass\UserData\index
C:\Windows\Temp\Cookies\index
C:\Windows\Temp\History\index
C:\Windows\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index

3- Open run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and wait for it to finish and get the XP CD handy
to insert it in if the system prompted you to do so.
Please perform one step (1,2,3)at a time and Reboot the machine and try the
secure sites also it will be good idea to check if the machine up2dates that
sometimes can fix some problem, try the certificate renewal (beware if you
don't want to install IE7 yet).
HTH.
Let us know.

Thanks for that.

Did the host amendment.

no effect

Deleted all the index files

no effect

Can`t do the third option as I am remote from the PC and can`t put the disc
in.

Anything else I can try?

Thanks

Alex

Hi Alex,
Sorry I really run out of troubleshooting Ideas in this but try the System
File checker, as this can repair corrupt or damaged files.
Also try to Update their JavaScript.

Check their local time, date, time zone. Adjust then try secure sites.
