HTML-stripping Email Client

S

Sol

Hi there.

In the interest of PC security, I was wondering if anyone could point
me toward a freeware email client that is capable of stripping out the
non-plaintext content from HTML/active content emails. I've used
Popcorn, but (unless I configured it incorrectly) it wasn't able to
actually strip out the HTML tags and so forth from the e-mails I
received--it just read all that garbage as plaintext and shoved it in
my face. Needless to say, it was rather ugly and difficult to read.

A plus would be the ability to switch between text-only mode and
HTML/etc. mode. I believe Eudora does this (but it isn't free).

Thanks many times over in advance for your help.

Thunderbird or the integrated Mozilla mail clients do all that and can
optionally filter image content and do spam classification.

Much more full featured than Popcorn at any level.

Eudora comes in 3 varieties Light/Sponsored/Paid. Both Light and Sponsored are free but either give you ads or
reduced functionality.

I haven't used it for a while but it does have the option to view in plain text.

There is a highly reviewed piece of dos freeware, htmstrip, by Bruce
Gutherie, that strips html tags from a message, file, or piped text.
It is highly configurable to do things you want with a genuine init
file.

Email clients let you pipe messages through any filter (e.g., htmstrip)
and view the results on your screen, save the results, etc. Pine even
lets you automatically select emails, based on keywords in text or other
criteria which will autotomatically get filtered through a program of your
choice.

I can not speak to the degree that the numerous other gui email clients let
you run external programs on their messages.

Mozilla Thunderbird can be set to show only plain text. Under
View / Message Body / Plain Text

Courier also does this and can toggle between views. You should still
be able to find a free version if you google. It will work well with K-
9 or SpamPal, and can be configured to use SSL connexions.
