html icon disappeared

I have this slight visual problem - it doesn't affect the functionality, but just annoys me. All my html files (not shortcuts I know how to fix those) are displayed with the non-associated program icon. I bothers me - can anyone tell me how to get the traditional explorer paper icon back for those? Again, I know how to fix the shortcut icons, but it shows all html files ugly like that. When double clicking the associated program still pulls the file (iexplorer) and works fine.

Thanks
Kare

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Fixes, File Assocation Fixes. One of the listed fixes is for HTM/HTML files. The REG file you download will restore the default associations, including the icon.

Log off and log back on and/or reboot, if you haven't already.

After that, if the icons haven't changed, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm

and

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm

Look in the right pane for the (Default) value. It should read "htmlfile" without the quotes. The Content Type should be "text/html" and the Perceived Type should be "text".

Additionally, are you running a browser other than Internet Explorer?

Doug,

Checked the registry values and they are the correct way - as you outlined.
I did reboot - nothing. I only have Internet Explorer - no other browsers.
Is there anything else you can think of?
Thanks

Kare,

Meanwhile:

Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following location:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile]

Backup the key by exporting it as a REG file.

After backing up the key, delete the htmlfile key from the registry.

Open Internet Explorer and click the Tools menu. Choose Internet Options and select the Programs tab.

Click Reset Web Settings button and complete the process.

Now, post the contents of the REG file.

*It's the 'IconHandler' value which is causing the problem.
