.htaccess help

Hello,
I uploaded my .htaccess and .htpasswd files, and yes the .htaccess works
only a little to well. When you go the websites home page or any other page
it pops up the login box. I only want the login box to pop up when you click
on the the link for the members only page. I have the .htaccess in the
folder that I want to protect and the path to the .htpasswd file is correct
because if you enter a correct user ID and password the page finishes loading
and you can then go to the restriced page with out logging in as you are
already logged in. I had this working once before, but now I can not
remembers how I had it set up. Please someone help.

Try making the members only section a sub web and then only restrict access
to that sub web

I have the members only section set up as a subdomain through godaddy. I
placed the .htaccess file in the that subdomain however, the pop up box for
your user ID comes up when going to any page. Should I also create a subweb
through front page called members?

Normally you'd create a sub web and then point your subdomain to that sub
web and then set unique permissions for the sub web and that would handle
the problem.
