How to create/upload .htaccess file?

I'd like to replace default 404 error page with my own page. I know that it's
possible with .htaccess file. Can to upload it to the webside or create in FP?

Thanks in advance.

It should already be on the site. Use an FTP program to go to the site, FTP
the file to your hard drive, make your changes and FTP it back.

If hosted on a Windows IIS web server, you have to contact your web host regarding the use of custom
error pages.

Your hosting control panel may allow you to do the custom error pages.

My host uses HELM control panel and it allows this. But I found it
interferes with the Frontpage server extensions, and I needed to have one or
the other, but not both.
