Uploading .htaccess

I would like to add to the .htaccess file to deny access to email bots. Am I
right in thinking that I have to disable FP extensions, up load the .htaccess
in ftp alter the file and save, and then renable the FP extensions?

Am I going to encounter any problems?

Yes - reinstalling the extensions will overwrite your .htaccess file.

To change this file, you must download the existing file, add any extra
code below the FrontPage code, then upload the file. If you disable then
reinstall or enable the extensions, your additions will be deleted.
