Can you scan across a LAN?

I have two WXP PRO (SP2) machines networked with file/printer sharing
working fine. I can print from either machine on the HP950.
However I cannot scan from the machine the HP950 is not connected to
(USB).

If I manually change the USB connector to the machine on which I want
to do a scan, it works fine.

This makes me think one cannot do a scan across the network?

Help?

You cannot share a scanner over a network in Windows XP.

I'm skeptical that such a blanket statement can possibly be true.

If all the Windows issues are set right (sharing, firewalls,
user accounts/permissions/passwords/whatever), wouldn't it depend
on the scanner (in this case, A-I-O) vendor's software/drivers?

I have an HP 2710 AIO. After spending a huge number of hours
on the phone with individuals for whom English is not their
first language, whose knowledge of HP products appears to be
mostly theoretical, and whose primary inclination is simply
to say "reinstall", I in fact have been able to scan to the
network-connected 2710 _one time_. I have been unable
to reproduce that since. That one time I was using the
(full permissions) admin account.

The HP AIO software is the worst software that I have ever used
in my entire life. Among the _many_ problems with the software,
I suspect that it does not work correctly with multiple XP
user accounts. Or, if it does, all of the many details that are
necessary to make it work (at all, let alone reliably) are
undocumented in their support literature and unknown to their
tech support people.

The "operating system" doesn't provide for the sharing of scanners. If
you find and install a software package that provides for sharing a
scanner across a network then you can "share the scanner across the
network" BUT the operating system is NOT sharing the scanner across the
network. SO the blanket statement is in fact correct.
