HP6210/5610 Setup/Drivers Problems with WinXP

Jeff R.

Hi all,

Recently attempted to install a HP6210 all-in-one inkjet on a modern (865G
chipset) Windows XP SP2 computer. After overcoming a bad installation CD
(common with this model), I was able to complete the setup but unfortunately
could not fax (or copy) from the PC. After spending about four hours
attempting to solve this problem (about half of this time on the phone to
HP's tech support) I came to the conclusion that the 6210 was probably
defective and exchanged it for a HP5610.

After removing all previously installed printer drivers/software, I ran the
HP utility that removes any remnant DLLs and registry settings. The 5610
installation went smoothly up to the point of the fax wizard setup which
fails. The printing and scanning perform as advertised without error.
Sending and receiving faxes, as well as using copy functions from the 5610's
front panel also work just fine.

The problem is whenever I attempt to use either the fax or copy functions
from the PC I get the error message "The device is not responding or is
disconnected". Also when attempting to access Help from the Control Panel
(which is supposed to popup a help window on the PC) I get an error message
on the 5610's display "Unable to communicate, make sure the PC is on" or
something to that effect.

Detailed information:
* Intel D865GBF Motherboard.
* Windows XP SP2 - current in updates.
* No other USB devices.
* No modem.
* Virus and rootkit scans are all negative.
* Two Items In Printers Folder: Officejet 5600 Series Printer (default),
Officejet 5600 Series Printer Fax
* Both of the above have "USB001 (Virtual Printer Port for USB)" as
Connection Type.
* No Errors or Warnings in Device Manager.
* Verified functioning phone line (it is shared with DSL but with installed
filter/splitter).

Other things I have tried (all with no effect):
* Multiple USB cables.
* Multiple USB ports.
* Changing USB Legacy Support setting within BIOS: (auto, none, 1.1, 2.0).
* Changing the default printer to "Officejet 5600 Series Printer Fax".
* Changing the connection type to "DOT4_001 Officejet5600 Series Printer"
(all combinations).

Surely, others must be having similar problems faxing (from the PC) with the
current series of HP's all-in-one products. This is clearly a setup or
driver problem. My question is how common is this problem and is there a
fix?

Thanks in advance, Jeff R.

THE SOLUTION IS TO BUY A CANON MP780. BETTER YET BUY SEPARATES. CANON
PRINTER, EPSON SCANNER, AND THEN GOOD FAX SOFTWARE.

Jeff ... when you say you're attempting to "use either the fax or copy
functions from the PC" I assume you mean attempting to use the 'HP Solution
Center', which is correct, as opposed to another software program.

Your port settings on the 5610 are correct but the splitter is a 'red flag'.
Splitters can definitely cause faxing problems. Try removing the splitter
and connecting the printer directly to the telephone wall jack. Also, be
sure to use the included phone connection cables that came with the printer.

Yes, that's correct - am using HP's software.

But unfortunately not the problem in this case, another thing I tried was
the filter that came with the 5610 (conneced directly without a splitter)
and it actually introduced some "noise" into the system (the SBC
filter/spliter does not). Also, remember that I can send and receive faxes
from the 5610's front panel without any trouble.

Thanks Fred, for giving it a shot.

The only thing I can then suggest is to go through the step by step section
on 'Setup the HP All-in-One for faxing' starting on page 19 of the User
Guide ... answering all the questions in sequence, and paying particular
attention to 'Case B' (DSL) on pp. 24-25.

Sounds like you may have already done this, but I thought it worth
mentioning.
