HP1100A Printer - Copier - Scanner

My son-in-law laid a big problem in my lap yesterday. He wants me to try to
get the scan and copy functions of the HP1100A to work under Windows XP Pro.
His system has 512MB of RAM, and the CPU runs at 868 MHZ. The HD is 120 GB,
with at least 80% available.

As it turns out, HP has a confusing mix of software and drivers that they
recommend, while at the same time they say the drivers are not recommended
for XP !

HP apparently does not have a reliable HP1100A software / driver package for
Windows XP. I have read in several forums where others have kludged
something up that works, even to the extent of editing the .inf file for one
of the drivers. Way beyond my knowledge to do that.

Has anyone come up with a repeatable procedure to make the scan - copy
functions work under computer control?

Using the HP1100A as a printer is easy, but - at least under Windows XP - it
seems almost impossible to get the scan and copy functions to work.

With all of this difficulty, I'm about to dump XP from this computer and
install W98SE. Maybe then the HP1100A will behave.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thank you very much for responding.

Yes, I tried them both,, deleting all occurrences of the printer drivers and
printer software before each attempt. Unfortunately, with either of these
sets of software, sometimes I can get the HP1100A to work - but most of the
time I get errors, such as "scanner not found". For example, I tried the
COPY function and it worked perfectly. Then, without doing anything at all
to the settings or to the software, the COPY attempt failed on the very next
try.

I have read some very negative comments from other users regarding the flaky
way the HP1100A works under Windows XP. It looks to me like HP never
designed a reliable set of drivers and software for XP.

Anyway, I connected it up to another machine running W98SE, and it ran
without any problems. So I have decided to remove XP from my son-in-law's
computer, and then install W98SE. He needs the HP1100A more than he needs
the latest operating system.

Regards.
