HP 6310 Scanner failure

Mitchell Zoren

My scanner stopped working after about a year. The scan head moves to the
start position and the light comes on briefly and then I get a scanner
failed, recycle power message. Recycling power does not work. The HP tech
folks had me reset the defaults and it still doesn't work. The printer /
copier functions work OK.

My computer has 2 G of memory and I use Windows XP Pro as an operating
system.

Any ideas?

Bad usb cable or port.
Can you try on another computer?
You did state that it does copy, correct?

Very hard to say. It could be a problem with the scanner itself in
hardware (the scan bar could be snagged, etc.) Make sure any scanner
bar lock isn't engaged. Unplug the unit from your printer and the
electricity for about 20 minutes. Then plug it back in, but not to the
computer and test to see if that function works of not. If it does,
it's likely a software or cabling issue with the computer. Try
exchanging the cable between printer and computer and try again.

Remove the drivers and load the most current from the HP website (they
no longer support Win 98, 98SE or ME) and see if that helps.

Obviously, if it doesn't work with the printer removed from the
computer, it isn't likely to be the software drivers at issue.
