HP upgrade from ME to XP

I upgraded my HP Pavilion 8766C from Windows ME to Windows
XP using the upgrade install (not the full install).
Everything works fine except for one thing. My startup
sound and shutdown sound do not play no matter what sound
I have chosen for the computer to play for those events.
All other sound events work fine. I've reset the Primary
IDE Channel to 'DMA if available' as the people at HP
suggested but the two sounds still do not play. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
Look at sounds and audio on the control panel and set each
event sound.

That isn't the problem. I have already done that. It
doesn't matter what sound that start or exit are set to.
Those two don't play but all the other sounds do.
