HP Share-To-Web

NJITGS

Would anyone happen to know how to remove the HP Share-To-Web association from my computer? ex. When right clicking an item in the Send To list it is present and when I open it and attempt to use it it does not offer any valid locations and I cannot add or customise a location for it, so therefore it is useless to me.

It is not in the Add/Remove Programs list and there is no uninstaller for it in it's programs folder. Perhaps someone knows the registry values for removing it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If there isn't any uninstaller, then my guess is you can't remove it and
it is part of whatever HP scanner/printer software you installed. You
should check with HP tech support in that case or just leave it alone.
Another example of HP's cr*ppy programming.

You can remove the icon from your Desktop by right-clicking it and I
believe you should be able to delete it. You can also stop the process
from running by using the System Configuration Utility. The file is
hpgs2wnf.exe. Start>Run>msconfig [enter]. Find hpgs2wnf and uncheck the
box next to its name. Apply and OK out. You don't need o restart
immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog saying you've
used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother
me about this again".

To remove the right-click context menu entry, the easiest way is with
the free ShellExView program which you can get here:

Hi Malke-

.....Ant thank you for your help!

Following your instructions I have found that the HP Share To Web is not
checked in the System Configuration Utility and I have also downloaded the
ShellEXView program and it is not there.

As you have mentioned, it is part of my HP scanners installation and I don't
recall being given the option in the custom installation of it's software to
install the HP STW, and at this point uninstalling and reinstalling my
scanners software will not remove it either. It would seem that it needs to
be removed from the registry values, unfortunately I do not know where to
look in the registry to do so.

Thanks again!

Then I'm sorry, but you would have to ask HP Tech Support. Since I don't
have any Windows machines with that software installed, I can't check
in the registry for you. You could do a search in the registry for the
program, but I'd hesitate to remove anything without knowing what its
function was. Best check with HP or bitterly live with it. Sorry.

FWIW, I also have an HP scanner, an option is shown
in All Programs for the Share to Web Wizard, but I do
NOT have the pissy context menu you have.

So, although I cannot remember it, there must be an option
to not install this crap during initial install.

Can you do a System Restore to before you installed the
HP stuff?

Whatever you do, don't insert the CD that comes with an HP digital camera,
either! You wouldn't BELIEVE the stuff it loads to your system!

There are no options in the STW setup wizard to uninstall it or change the
way it behaves, there are only select sites to upload to and the only one
(Ofoto) that I am registered with does not accept FTP protocalls because
Ofoto is now Kodak EasyShare and when they merged I don't think that they
included FTP capabilities, they have thier own uploading tool.that is also
problematinc and I never use it.

As for the installation of my scanner I don't recall there being an option
in the custom setup to not install it and I can't be bothered uninstalling
and reinstalling the entire scanner software and program when I can just
take the registry values out for the STW, and as I have previously
mentioned, I do not know where in the registry to look.

So here I am still stumped!

Well, I would say you'll just need to FIND the time to uninstall/reinstall
then.

Fiddling with the Registry, when you do not have SPECIFIC
instructions, can leave you with an unbootable system, especially
with this type of stuff.

Have you contacted HP support?

Or can't you be "bothered" with that as well?

Elaine,

Not sure I've completely understood your question, but have you tried simply deleting the "Share-to-Web Upload Folder" from:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\SendTo (or whatever name replaces Owner).

Note: The SendTo folder is a hidden one.

That will delete the option from the SendTo list you see when you right-click on something.

The program files are under C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP
Share-To-Web.
Share-To-Web came with my HP printer.
I can't find an uninstall.

Since this thread continues, I did a little looking:

Under Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP\Share-To-Web\Files\
are registry entries & descriptions of the services that Share-to-Web
uses. In my case, there are 8 of them.

Searching the Registry reveals that they exist in several places and
it is not clear which ones would be the proper ones to remove.

All I can say is that the hpgs2.wnd.exe and the hpgs2wnf.exe services
which handle this stuff ARE running here, but I have NO context
Share to Web choice in my context menus for supported image filetypes.

Find and open this file: hpgs2wns.chm.

According to the Troubleshooting topic, this is possible:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Enabling and disabling the Share-to-Web Upload Folder
The Share-to-Web Upload Folder is enabled by default
and is displayed on your computer desktop.
To disable it, select No, do not show the Share-to-Web
Upload Folder. Choosing this will remove the folder from
the desktop. Be sure to save any files to another location
before disabling the folder.
To enable it, select Yes, Show the Share-to-Web Upload Folder.
Click Next to complete the setup.
----------------------------------------------

from the Start>>HP Share to Web>>Wizard.

I don't remember if this is what I did, it's been over a
year.

I do NOT have a "Share-to-Web Upload Folder" under
my SendTo folder as described below.

If simply deleteing it will fix this, but you can't see it,
go to Tools>>Folder Options>>View in Explorer and make sure
that "Show Hidden Files and Folders" is selected.

To see the "Share-to-Web Upload Folder", do what "V Green" says, then just delete it.

To stop those 2 pesky services (hpgs2.wnd.exe and hpgs2wnf.exe), do:

Start > Run > msconfig > Startup tab

and uncheck whichever of those you see there, and reboot.

HP seems to throw in a whole bunch of stuff, but a different bunch depending on which machine you bought and which month you bought
it, nobody in Support seems to know what it's supposed to do, and mostly (in my experience) it does nothing.

For instance, I don't believe I ever had a "Share-to-Web Upload Folder" on my desktop, but I've always has the SendTo item, which
does nothing if you've turned the service off (as above), but starts the STW Wizard if you've got the service on.

I also think the STW concept never got off the ground because progress went another way. Much like Beta, or should that be VHS?

Hi everyone,

I've just overcome this issue on one of my clients computers and
thought i'd share the experience:

1) when exploring My Computer and going up one folder (essentially the
desktop) explorer would freeze

2) when trying to attach a file to an email attachment explorer would
freeze and freeze outlook with it..

i did all kinds of troubleshooting and optimization on this machine to
no avail.

Had never heard of this Share-to-Web folder on the desktop, and you
cannot see it on the actual desktop, but only thru windows explorer.

Task Manager was used to end the process, which then finally allowed
me to right click on the Share-to-Web folder and enter the properties
page.

Simply setting the Upload option from Automatic to Manual resolved the
issue instantly.

Hope this helps you, as removing this darned service doesn't seem to
be as easy and expected.
