HP PSC500 - Prints but doesn't scan

Help! I had to reformat the hard drive and followed the instructions about
allowing XP to find the PSC500 itself rather then installing it through add
hardware. It now prints but does not scan. Gives an "unable to connect to
PC" error message when I press the scan button. Thanks in advance for the
assistance!
