HP PSC 1315 All in one

Running XP SP2. I print with a HP 1315 all in one using a DOT4 port.
Normally at boot up, the "safey remove" icon appears at the lower right
corner next to the clock and everything is fine. 3 times now in the last 6
months, the icon does not appear and all of the DOT4 entries in device
manager are gone. I reinstall the software, but on reboot, everything is
lost again. The first time, ad aware found a "malicous active x program"
deleted it and everything was fine. The second time, I found a new entry in
startup programs, deleted it, and everything was fine. This time, I can find
nothing using ad aware, Microsoft anti spyware, spybot, or hijack this.
Called HP. Their work around is to tag the "safely remove" icon on the
taskbar with "always hide". Seems to work for now, but I can't help but to
think that something else is still lingering in my system. Any ideas?

Any ideas?

Not really but maybe a couple of them. I tend to not get any spyware or
malware unless I put it on my system intentionally or it's a system that
someone has brought by for me to work on. When I do have this problem I use
the scanners to tell me that it's there and then I don't allow them to
remove them. I go to a search engine and start to plug away at it and figure
out how to get rid of it on my own. I then delete the entire thing (and any
references to any file) in safe mode without networking and with system
restore turned off. I then kill the prefetch and/or dll cache while in safe
mode and reboot. When I start again I scan again and if it's clean then I
turn restore back on, make a drive image on DVD(s) for the client or myself,
and make a new restore point. What you can do in your situation is try to
remember what was removed and then do some manual searching to see if
there's still something lingering as you suspect there is. Truth be told no
spyware (or even AV) application has definitions for all things and none of
them are any good unless you've updated to the latest definitions. I've been
using Microsoft Anti-Spyware BETA (note the capital letters) for a while now
and putting it through it's paces. It's been rather good to me so far.
