HP Printer vs. XP Computer

Lois G.

Has anyone had problems with their printer communicating with XP? If you
feel like reading, here's what happened:

The players:

XP Gateway Pentium (R), 4CPU, 3.20 GHz, 1.00GB RAM, with a 228G hard drive.
SP2 was factory loaded.

HP 882C Desk Jet (five years old and previously successfully connected to a
Windows 98 model).

The first few days after the new hookup, the printer worked OK, and then it
suddenly went haywire. It printed gibberish, the paper got stuck, and even
after I deleted the print job it kept printing! It was possessed.

I uninstalled, reinstalled, unplugged, re-plugged my brains out, to no
avail. I then emailed tech support at HP and they sent me 5 pages of
suggestions. After uninstalling the print drivers by using the disk that
came with the printer (the one thing I hadn't tried) my problem seemed to be
solved. I was able to print in Word again. At least I assumed that after I'd
successfully printed two pages that we were back up and running again.

However, when I tried to print an email message, the paper got stuck in the
printer, then I got an error message. The page that was stuck had one line
of print on it. Buttons were flashing, it was printing one line per page
again, then gibberish until it ran out of paper. I shut it down. and
canceled the print job. It took a full 4 minutes for the job to be deleted.

I'm emailing HP again, but after reading of everyone else's problems here,
I'm now wondering if my printer has gone bad or if this is XP related. All
comments welcomed.

End of rant.

First: Have you installed a printer driver that is 100% compatible with
Windows XP?

Second: The HP web site has extensive support resources.

HP's instructions were to uninstall the software using the disk provided
with the printer, and when restarting the system would automatically select
the correct driver.

After doing that, and successfully printing the two pages, I thought I was
in like Flynn. Not.

Anyway, yes, HP does have extensive resources. They've already replied that
it sounds like I need live support and I've provided them with my number &
best time to contact me. Stay tuned.

Jammed paper isn't a software problem.

As for the rest of it, make sure your cable is okay. You might want to try
another one if you have one handy.

The 882c is a nice printer and old. HP does have updates on
their website which should be downloaded and used to
reinstall the software after you remove the printer as
presently installed.
The 882c has both parallel and USB connections, suggest that
you reinstall using USB, which is better supported under XP.

Paper getting stuck is often an issue with the quality and
condition of the paper. The paper must be smooth and DRY.
Damp paper (even high humidity) can cause the paper to swell
and soften, leading to jams. A five year old printer needs
to be cleaned properly to remove contamination and condition
the paper feed mechanism.
