hp printer installation problems

When I connect my usb cable to connect my hp photosmart
printer, I receive the following message: "An error
occurred during the installation of the device. The data
is invalid." This has occurred with both of my hp
printers. Operating system is windows 2000 professional.

Have you installed the drivers according to instructions?
