HP Photosmart problem

Photosmart 325.

It's never worked from new (it's a free gift with an internet mobile phone
offer, too much hassle to return it) and HP web help and customer support
have not been very helpful.

From switch-on it came up with a cartridge positioning error, but I can
clear that with a bit of poking and prodding. It then decides it has a paper
jam, even when there is no paper inserted. When I do insert paper it loads
the first centimetre or so then 'reverses' it back out and then displays the
paper jam message.

I have taken the printer apart and found nothing obvious, so I am now at the
mercy of those with greater knowledge.

How and where is a paper jam detected? Is there a way to do a 'low
level' real hard reset?

Any and all help gratefully received.

Sounds like a bit of polystyrene packing is jammed in there , or there is a
transit screw somewhere that you haven't removed.
