I recently had an opportunity to work on a pavilion, wierdest pc I've ever
seen.
has anybody had experience with these things, the persons display upon boot
up shows bios screen, and then the display goes wacky, words are displayed on
the upper right corner and appear to wrap to the lower left, but go by too
quickly for me to read, then it goes to a black screen, the pc is still
operating as I can see the hd activity light flashing, but no display, what
could cause this?

Laptop or desktop?

It's possible the display is set out of range. Press F8 at boot and use VGA
mode. If that helps, set the video correctly.

desktop if you want to call it that, the body of the pc is part of the
monitor, little tiny thing with a cd drive internal, mounted under the
monitor. looks like it has a plug in it for external monitor.

How old is this thing? I haven't seen one of them for maybe 15 years. You're
right, they are a pita to work on.

And does changing to VGA mode affect anything?

Otherwise, it's possible that there is an internal physical fault that will
require service or replacement.

Can't be too old. See the URL above.

Not what I had in mind. The one I was thinking of was a CRT case with the
CPU and keyboard built into it. One of the women at work had one she asked
me to work on a number of years ago. Now that I think on it, it might have
been a Compaq Presario or something like that :)

I'd much rather work on the one you refered to.

At this point it's impossible to change anything as the monitor goes black.
I can try to access the Bios, see if that allows some kind of video, I'll be
seeing this person this weekend, at least I now have some software to blank
the admin password, she forgot it and her current account doesn't allow
software installs.
(She has two of these things, one is working, the other has the faulty
display).

If the monitor goes black or the display trashes before you can press F8,
the problem isn't with Windows, it's hardware.
