HP, ONE is slow, but OTHER is OK, Why?

Hi:
I have two HP 'identical'/twine computers sitting on the same table.

One of the computers is VERY slow to 'Start' when I opened Windows,
particuary 'opening-up' Dial-Up box.
Then, I looked at 'Start menu' by accessing ; Start < Run < Start Menu
On a faster HP, there are MORE menues than a 'slower' HP on msconfig.

In the past, I upgraded Windows XP by using SP 1, but instead improved
perfomance, I got a disaster, ... not
run smoothly and fast.
Afterwards, ... I found that HP(older) machine does NOT go along with XP
'upgrade,' because HP already
installed its own programs which conflicted with XP. For this reason, I
never upgrade my 'two' HP
machine since. Then, the non-upgrade does not affect XP performance, as
knowing my past bad experience
on upgrade on XP.

So, why one of HP machines is SO slow loading XP, ... particularly
'dial-up' box appearing on the
screen?

Is this because, a slow-loading HP machine using for eBay that has plenty of
colorful pictures, while
normal-speed HP using for practical purpose with NO fancy picutres?

If that's the case, ...what/how should I do to fix this problem?

Any clues, suggestions, inputs would be truly appreciated.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements
on each machine?

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. To get this information whilst in Windows Explorer
place the cursor on each drive in turn, right click and select Properties.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager?
Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and
select Properties. Hardware, Device Manager. If yes what
is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK.
What drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which
are not checked.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the time of the error and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
