HP Officejet 5550

I just did a clean install of XP. Reinstalled latest drives from HP for the
officejet 5550. I now get the dreaded BSOD at unexpected times. Sometimes
it's at shutdown, other times when I'm doing nothing at all. It is connected
via USB. This is part of the long message I get

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Then a hex dump message at the bottom. Is there something I can do? Do you
suppose it could be a problem with the USB driver for the Dell computer?
Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Ken, it probably is not your Officejet causing the BSOD's. Did you
reinstall all your XP Updates including SP2?

Yes I did. I updated all of the software, beginning with SP2. Reading
threads it seems there is a problem with hp and sp2. Right now it isn't real
pressing. It's my mom's machine and she doesn't do anything too heavy. Any
other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Ken, I have a HP 5550 also and the one thing that I learned was that you
have to install the software and drivers first
then connect the printer. Try disconnecting all the USB devices and rt
click MyComputer>select Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>USB Controllers.
rt click on each and choose Uninstall. Remove any HP Printer
Software and Drivers from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and then
Restart. Then try loading the HP software
and drivers. It will tell you when to connect the Printer.

Next time do the install correctly by first removing/turning off all
your perifs. Then install your devices one by one accd. to the docs.
