My HP laser jet IIp plus won't feed. It makes a grinding noise and then
says paper jam. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Firstly make sure there is no scrap of paper or other obstruction stopping the
paper feed from the tray.
If the paper path is clear, does the top sheet of paper in the tray look like
it has lifted a bit?
If so, the pick up roller needs to be replaced. But you could try to clean the
roller with isopropyl alcohol, that might work for a while.
Kits for this repair are available and if you decide to go ahead I strongly
advise that you fit the whole kit not just the roller.
One source of the kit is http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/hp/K01. You may
find similar kits elsewhere. They are not hard to install.
You might look to see what a second hand printer of this vintage costs and
compare it to the repair kit cost before you decide.

Broken gear. Fuser comes to mind. Open the front with the power off and try
to
manually turn the big black gear on the right.
