HP LaserJet IIP plus - envelopes?

One of my printers is a HP LaserJet IIP plus. The printer works fine, but I
experience problems printing envelopes from mail merge in MS Word 2002.
The printer is quite old and I don't have a manual, but an envelope icon on
the paper tray clearly suggests that it can print envelopes.
When I insert an envelope the way indicated, and I give the print command,
nothing happens. The printer doesn't seem to "see" the C6 envelope.

Printing envelopes with my HP DeskJet 720C works fine, but I'd prefer
printing black text with the laserjet for saving ink costs.

Any tips? Manuals?

App: MS Word 2002
OS: Win2kSP4

When we had a IIp we did try printing envelopes but it wasnt very
satisfactory, they tended to get a bit curled up and the self seal ones
would try and seal themselves under the heat of the laser process.

The computer should be telling the printer to be prepared for the
envelope but C6 is a funny size, not DL?

If you turn the printer off-line, you can use the Menu button to bring
up menus on the lcd on the front until you find page sizes which you can
then adjust with the +- button, on the IIIp there are options for MP
paper size and Job size, try adjusting these as well as the ensuring the
computer software is sending the right size.

The IIIp doesn't know about C6 sized envelopes, but does know about DL,
so I imagine the same would be true of the IIp.

Yes, I see what you mean... I have been struggling to merge to printer and
it just did nothing. So I had already given up and closed MS Word. After I
re-read your reply I tried the on line button. (I don't have a manual).
Suddenly the printer started feeding the envelope (for the first time!) and
it was printed as I chose in the (now closed) application. Apparently the
job was still in memory.
The way the envelope got printed is OK, but as you wrote: it gets really
curled up and becomes half sealed. So I won't try to print envelopes in the
LaserJet again.
The HP 720C does a great job, also for envelopes, but as you know: ink
cartridges cost gold...
