HP LaserJet III - not loading paper, help!

I got an HP LaserJet III (33449A) delivered in the mail and it looks
like it was damaged in the process. I heard rattling coming from the
paper tray holder area, and saw a spring about 1.4" long and 1/4" in
diameter, along with a tiny broken plastic end it was obviously supposed
to be attached to.

The printer starts up, led display goes to "READY". However, any job
that would feed paper results in a "13 PAPER JAM". I set it to manual
feed and tried a self-test (power up, offline, hit "TEST" for 5 seconds
until "05 SELF TEST" followed about ten seconds later by "06 PRINTING
TEST") which also produced the paper jam.

The roller appears to be capable of picking up and moving the paper. I
put a piece in the envelope feeder and it did move it slightly.
However, the roller does not actually "roll" more than about 75% of a
full revolution before it stops, hence the paper never makes it in. I
also notice that the pressure assembly doesn't lift the paper in the
paper tray up to the roller.

Other than the small problem that printer doesn't print, it appears to
be completely fine. It accepts commands from the parallel port and
passes its startup self test.

I've been digging around the HP parts site and can't find for the life
of me the spring that broke. I've ordered a CD containing the support
manuals, but until then I was hoping someone could point me to a
procedure that could at least help isolate the cause.

Have you looked at the assembly diagrams at
http://www.printerworkds.com/ ?

The spring may well have come from the transfer guide assembly.

You have to take the cover off and then you can get to the screws that
hold the transfer guide assembly in.

Use an egg crate to hold the screws in seperate compartments from each
thing that you remove from the printer. If you have good diagrams, then
you can make good notes as to how to put the thing back together.
Little notes on scraps of paper in the egg crate cups are a great help,
for the first time or two in disassembly.

This is your next best thing to the service manuals.

Good browsing.

I also notice that the pressure assembly doesn't lift the paper in the paper
tray up to the roller.>

Shutdown the printer when it gets the paper jam error. Note where the paper is.
If the paper is within the transfer rollers and can be easily removed then the
transfer rollers are not seizing the paper. If the paper is not within the
transfer rollers then it is not being picked up by the paper roller. In either
case remove the transfer roller assembly as another has indicated.
The spring you indicaet is probably from either end of the transfer roller
assembly. They are secured by metal hooks on either end of the assembly. The
springs keep the separation pad tensioned against the pickup roller.

FWIW the paper is raised through a slot in the tray by a tongue below the tray.
The paper is raised against the roller and the roller feeds the paer past the
separation pad into the transfer roller assembly.

I am sure there is more discussion of this online.
The HPIII is a great printer. Also not printers are bought by the pound. The
more pounds the more better.
If you would like, post a .jpg of the spring with accurate measurements.

Even better, Get the Laserwriter II service manual, from
<http://preterhuman.net/texts/computing/Apple_Service_PDF/Printers/>

Most of the works are identical with the HPII/III. Just different
case, motherboard, I/O. This has a good take-apart guide.

On a related note, if the original poster gets his HPIII working,
I have a 4M ramboard and a Pacific Page PostScript cartridge for the
HPIII going cheap ($20 + postage).
Contact me at <[email protected]> (NB, not the address in the
headers).
