HP LaserJet 5m has 79 SERVICE error

Hi,

I have an HP LaserJet 5m printer. After I
turned the printer on I didn't receive the
error yet. As soon as I wanted to print, the
printer didn't start to print, but instead
gave me the error:

--------------------------------------------
79 SERVICE(4085)
--------------------------------------------

I looked the error number up in my owners
manual, but it only told me that it's a
firmware-error. I should turn the printer
off, then back on and if the error still
appears, contact my HP service representative
and tell him the number behind the error
message (4085). Well, it does!

Does anybody know, what I can do to solve the
problem?

Thanks,
Firona

this is a copy/paste from one site:

79 SERVICE [XXXX] The printer detected an error. 1. Press CANCEL JOB
to clear the print job from the printer memory. 2. Turn the printer off, and
then turn the printer on. 3. Try printing a job from a different software
application. If the job prints, go back to the first application and try
printing a different file. (If the message only appears with a certain
software application or print job, contact the software vendor for
assistance.) 4. If the message persists with different software applications
and print jobs, disconnect all cables to the printer that connect it to the
network or printer. 5. Turn the printer off. 6. Remove all memory DIMMs or
third-party DIMMs from the printer. (Do not remove the firmware DIMM in the
lowest DIMM slot.) 7. Remove all EIO devices from the printer. 8. Turn the
printer on. 9. If the error no longer exists, install each DIMM and EIO
device one at a time, making sure to turn the printer off and back on as you
install each device. 10. Replace a DIMM or EIO device if you determine that
it causes the error. 11. Remember to reconnect all cables that connect the
printer to the network or computer. 12. If the error persists, replace the
firmware DIMM. 13. Replace the formatter.

79 & 80 errors - general info. For trouble shooting 79 and 80 errors
you want to determine if external I/O devices are the cause or if it is the
formatter. Remove all external I/O devices (JetDirect, memory, etc.) and see
if problem persists. If not, replace the formatter.

i hope this will help

This is an internal controller error and can be caused be several things.
1. Toner cartridge failure (rare but it happens), if you have access to another
cartridge give it a try.
2. Does the printer have any memory simms installed? If so, remove them and see
if the problem goes away.
3. Rarely this can be caused by an incompatibility with the driver or
application. You can try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. Also, are
you using a standard application or something unusual?
4. Does the problem happen when you print the printers own internal test page
(status page, or fonts list)?
5. Finally if none of the above then the formatter has failed. This may not be
economic to replace but is a fairly straighforward task.
Please advise
Tony
