My LaserJet 5 is showing the following error message ...

79 SERVICE(4165)

and making a loud noise.

Anyone know what the problem might be?

This can be caused by a toner cartridge, or by a few other things like the
formatter PC board, third party memory or driver/application incompatibility.
The fact that there is a noise indicates the toner may be the most likely.
Unfortunately if you buy a new toner and it does not fix it the money for the
toner will probably be wasted. Do you know someone with a LJ5, 4 or 4+ who
could lend you a cartridge for testing?

Well, I happen to have another toner cartridge.
And, as soon as I put the toner cartridge in,
the printer made that noise, which is unusual and
makes me feel uneasy. But, I was able to print something.
And then, I get that service message again.
The website that my printer doesn't seem to like is ...
http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=2782&at=0
Somehow, that noise has gone away (I think/hope).
Also, the printer pulled 2 sheets on 1 print job so
I pulled the optional Tray 3 out.

I have not seen a problem caused by printing from one particular web site and
find it difficult to believe that would be the cause.
Tray 3 probably has a worn separation pad. Did the noise go away after you
removed tray 3?

HAHA ...

My memory is a little fuzzy about exactly when Tray 3 was pulled out.
But, Tray 3 was recently used again after the tray spring tension was adjusted.
So, that might be related.

I am told by the company where I bought the toner cartridges that
the grinding noise can be due to the printer running out of toner.
And, that it takes a little time for it to work it's way out,
which seems to be in sync with my case. After replacing
the toner cartridge, it did take a little time for the noise to go away.
The optional Tray 3 spring tension adjustment was just a coincidence.

Make it into a part of an art sculpture?

Seriously, it depends upon where you live and what services exist there.

You can have it refilled and reuse it.

Many stationary stores will take them (they sell them to refillers).
Some will even give you a coupon for a couple bucks toward something in
the store, or a free ream of paper.

Some charities take them also to sell for refilling.

HP takes them back for free (and in some cases will pay for postal
costs, in certain countries. Some countries legislate that they must be
taken back by the manufacturer.

Many locations have freecycle lists where you can offer items you don;t
want for free and someone may want it for parts or to refill. Go to
freecycle.org to find out if there is such a list in your location.

I'm getting that SERVICE message again. Are you sure that
it can't be due to the website? This time, I select "Adobe PDF" as
the printer name and I get a .log (no .pdf) file that says ...

I don’t know about the noise but we do have two different HP and XEROX printers that sometime give similar errors when I’m
printing PDFs. printing that same file on different printers Konica, Canon causes no problems.

Lately I been getting this errors printing on XEROX Phaser 5500DN PS from (Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard) printing that PDF
on the same printer but from Adobe Acrobat 7 comes out no problem

I’m guessing my problem is more software/driver issue not the hardware unless it is printer firmware or postscript

I suspect that one "current" problem might be due to
Firefox not being setup properly to print from the iHerb.com website.
Apparently, the iHerb.com website uses some Japanese font.
FYI, using Internet Explorer, I was able to print from the iHerb.com website.

FWIW, if there are problems printing PDFs, Adobe recommends using an option to
build a bitmap of the entire page, rather than feeding a printer data stream to
the printer via an often convoluted Windows driver. The printer data with a
bitmap of the page still must pass through the Windows driver. When I had an
older PCL-only LaserJet, I often encountered problems printing PDFs. I added
memory to the printer (also advisable for other reasons), and the problems were
reduced but never eliminated. HP may well have fixed its driver problem
printing PDFs, but I doubt it.

I have NEVER had a problem printing a PDF since I switched to an HP LaserJet
with PostScript SIMM, initially with a LaserJet 4 Plus. If printing PDFs as
bitmaps does not work, maybe a PostScript SIMM (and printing through the
PostScript driver) is the best answer. After all, Adobe owns both the PDF spec
and the PostScript spec, so the left hand knows what the right hand is doing.
Both memory and PostScript SIMM are cheap and easy these days for a LaserJet 5.

Well, I have seen strange things, maybe it is the Website and there are
definitely some issues printing PDF's on some systems.
The error message can be caused by application issues so maybe there's a clue
there.
The noise concerns me though.
Sorry about the delay in replying.

Using Internet Explorer, I am able to print to
either the HP LaserJet 5 or Adobe PDF printer.
The grinding noise is under control. It just takes
a little time to work its way out once it occurs.
So, all troubleshooting point to Firefox's inability to
handle the website's use of the MS-Mincho font.
