HP Laserjet 5L (again)

Hey all,

Ok, my printer works fine thanks to Dave, but I have two more
questions about it. First, I can't figure out how to configure it so
that it won't take *all* the paper sheet at once, but only one,
leaving the others for future use. Secondly, it is turned off when the
computer starts, then it turns on when I print a thing, and then it
*never* goes off. I must take off the electric cable. Not really
good... If someone knows a solution to resolve these problems, I would
be very grateful if he shares it with me.
Thanks,

Thibault

The printer needs the paper-feed fix which I think is still available
free from HP until the end of October. Check www.hp.com and enter
Laserjet 5L in the search box. I don't have the exact link. Secondly,
the printer does stay powered, but enters a sleep mode after a quiet
period. Check in the printer properties, I don't recall though ever
seeing a specific setting on it. Hold the power key on for a couple of
seconds to get a printer test/setup page.

Wow, it seems that I've come at the right time with my question !
You're right, this hp service ends on October, 31th. I ordered a kit,
but I was surprised it couldn't be downloaded. Is there a thing that
need to be replaced in the printer ? Anyway, it's a pity they're
ending this service, it's very useful.
Thanks anyway,

Thibault

Does anyone know if it is just the 5L they are stopping this for or are
other printers affected too?

Even if the pads are free, you may want to think twice before investing
any money in this printer, such as buying a replacement toner cartridge.

The HPLJ 1012 is available for $199, or even $149 in some stores.

The pads may be free, but unless you can install them yourself, the
installation will cost money.

This printer can jam in the fuser area, and that is not user servicable.
More money to have a service facility unjam it.

The machine is somewhat brain defective -- it was the first entry level
HP LaserJet -- and they left some things out in order not to canabalize
their high end. It can have difficulty printing complicated documents
and links. Also, there can be problems in printing forms such as
labels. I bought mine in 1996 for close to $500 -- a bargain then.
However, I have just deommissioned it in favor of the 1012. It is
double feeding sheets, and the paper just got jammed in the fuser.
Getting this fixed would probably cost more than a new 1012.

One problem with the 1012 -- it is USB only. I had some additional cost
in buying a USB print server. The 1015 has more memory and a parallel
port as well as a USB port. I am not sure of the cost. Note that these
machines are more than 3x as fast as the 5L.

I am about to buy a laserjet from hp, and I was wondering how good the
1012 is. I am not looking to spend a lot of money on this, but tell me
if it is that bad. Thanks
