Hi
HP LaserJet 5
Have been using this printer for 10 years Done about 150 000 pages
When I originally purchased the printer received phantom paper jams. I say
phantom because there was no jam Opening the printer and closing cleared the
jam HP replaced the fuser unit under warranty and I have replaced it at
about 120 000 pages Still getting the phantom jams It is intermittent and
sometimes goes days without producing a jam
Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Do you get an error message? The error code will help to narrow down the
problem.
Also, does the jam only occur when you attempt to print or are printing? Or
does it happen at power on or when the printer is idle.

Here's the solution, it is about an hour of work.

* Take off the top cover by removing two screws behind the rear door and
one under the top door (for the toner).
* insert a screw-driver in the wide vertical holes under the top door,
unclamp the cover this way and lift the cover up gently
* after unclamping, lift the left side of the cover up, holding the
right side more or less in place
* unconnect the display in the cover from the rest of the printer
* take out the upper paper guidance assembly by pushing two little
clamps that hold the assembly to the metal frame of the printer, lift
the assembly up a bit and then push it towards the back of the printer
* remove the ring at the end of the lower roller-axis and take the axis out.
* take out the four plastic rollers
* carefully but thouroughly scrap the surface of the plastic rollers
using a knife, lightly scrap the rubber rolers on the axis to.
* re-assemble the printer.

Succes,
EJ

Sorry EJ but this will not fix false paper jams.
I am aware of the issue you are addressing with the delivery (output) assembly
and your advice would be appropriate for a printer that has jams in that
assembly.
But it does not explain why the printer had the problem from new nor does it
address false paper jams.
