HP Deskjet 722C won't print in XP

B

Brian

I just installed a new hard drive, then loaded XP. I
have an HP Deskjet 722C that worked fine before. Now I
can't get anything to print - not even the test page. I
checked the Microsoft website, and there doesn't appear
to be a compatabilty issue, but I've tried everything and
can't it to work. Anyone have any suggestions?

Go to www.coribright.com and find complete uninstall instructions for
the driver you are using now.
Next:
Go to www.hp.com and look for WinXP driver. You won't find an XP
driver, but you will find instructions for installing the 722c using the
driver that comes with WinXP. Of course, you know all this since you've
"tried everything", but try it anyway. My 722 works perfectly. It's a
great printer, especially for text, don't give up on it

Have you tried the procedures found here-

.
Tom, I tried the link you sent, and it turns out I've
tried the HP suggested solutions several times already.
When using the automated solution, it can't find my
printer (I don't know why). I tried the manual fixes,
but they don't work either. Any other suggestions?

I went to coribright.com and followed what I found on
uninstalling drivers. I also tried some other things on
the website, that also didn't work. I tried the hp.com
solution, reinstalled the driver, but it still doesn't
work. Could the fact that my old hard drive with Windows
ME is still installed in the PC have anything to do with
it? Is something from ME telling the printer to do
something that conflicts with XP? I'm not running ME
because the operating system somehow got corrupted
(another story). I haven't re-formatted the drive yet
because I want to save the data that's there.

Again, any suggestions would be appreciated.

There may be some connection there, but it's beyond my sphere of
knowledge. I would suggest subscribing to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers newsgroup. There are many very
knowledgeable MS-MVPs monitoring that group, and I'm sure you'll get
more, and more helpful, replies than on this one. Also, be sure to
include all pertinent facts when posing your questions.

OK. Since it can't "find the printer", let's start with some basics.

Go to the Start Run slot and type cmd and press enter.

I window will open showing the command prompt.

Type
c:
and press enter
Type
\
and press enter
Type
dir > lpt1
and press enter.

The printer should print a directory listing for c:\, the root directory of
C drive. The printer will stop printing after the last line of the
directory and the page probably will _not_ eject from the printer. Press the
form feed button on the printer.

Let us know if it happens.

Brian,
I had the same issue with my 722 a year ago when I installed it. I
found an article somewhere, but it told me I had to change a printer
settings in my bios. Once I did that (I basically fiddled around in
the bios with the printersetting-- sorry cant tell you what I did,
since I just got a new computer and printer and gave that one away...)
It worked great.

Hope this helps.

That might be worth trying (try SPP or standard parallel port or
bi-directional or similar). However, usually the printer will print
something, a few lines of gibberish, for example, even if the setting is
wrong. In this case, the printer prints not-at-all.
