HP DDS3 SCSI drive

Adrian Lavery

I have recently added a HP C1537A SCSI tape drive to two
of our Win2kPro Dell Desktops. Since then, when running
ntbackup, I have to prepare the tape before running a
backup. If I don't prepare the tape I get an error:
There is no unused media with the selected type.
Add unused media or click cancel to select another type.
NOTE: It may take up to 60 seconds for Removable Storage
to recognize new media.

This is as per Technet 269060. The hotfix in the article
was added to SP2 and the machines in question are SP4.

Has anyone else had the same problem or have you any
suggestions? As a result of the error I cannot run an
automatic backup as after the first days backup is run,
each subsequent day has an error in the report of no
unused media.

Dear Adrian,

Thank you for your post.

Based on my research, this kind of problem may occur if we have installed
some third party backup software (for example, a trial version of
ArcServe). Please temporarily all third-party backup tools to see if
ntbackup works.

Does the problem occur with other tape drives? If everything works well
before adding this HP C1537A SCSI tape drive, I think that the first
troubleshooting step should be checking the device drivers for this tape
drive.

1. Open Explorer, browse to the WINNT\INF folder, and then rename the
Oem#.inf and Oem#.pnf files with the file extension OLD, For example:
rename oem1.inf to oem1.old.

Note: These files are hidden files by default.

2. Under the Device Manager, right the tape drive and then click Uninstall,
click YES to uninstall it.
3. Reboot the computer, reinstall drivers for the tape drive device, and
then try to use NTbackup again.

Second, please ensure that you have installed the latest Windows 2000
Service Pack 4, which contains the latest ntbackup.exe. You can download
the whole installation package for Windows 2000 SP4 from:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/6/A/E6A04295-D2A8-40D0-A0C5-241BFEC
D095E/W2KSP4_EN.EXE

NOTE: It's a full package about 128 MB. It may take a long time to download.

Please let me know if the problem has been resolved. Thanks.

Joe Wu
