HP Colour laserjet 5500 and mailmerging

David Gartrell

Hi,

Can anyone help me with a problem please. Basically I've taken delivery of
a new Hewlett Packard Colour Laserjet 5500 and want to do a mailmerge to it
using Microsoft Word. These mailmerges can quite often be for several
thousand, However when i send the job to the printer it may print 200 at
most and then start from the begining again which is very annoying and
potentially very costly too. Does anyone have any ideas how i could get
round this so that i can send a mailmerge job to this printer and have it
run through smoothly? The priter is connected to our LAN so all jobs are
sent to it through this.

Many thanks for your help

David.

I can give you only a wild guess here, based on previous experience.

I have a Laserjet 5Si connected via its network card. Once, many years
ago, while the printer was still under warranty, I started getting the
same results you describe. Print jobs suddenly starting over again
from the beginning. I never printed to it from a mail merge, though. I
did, however, print very long jobs to it -- thousands of pages at a
time.

After spending hours on the phone with HP tech support we finally
concluded that the problem was in the jetdirect card in the printer.
The HP tech didn't want to admit that the jetdirect card in the
printer might be defective, but after eliminating all other
possibilities, he had them send me a new one. After installing the
replacement jetdirect card the problem disappeared and has never
reappeared.

You might try printing a very long ordinary document to it -- not a
mail merge, and from a different application than Word -- to see if
the same thing happens. If it does, that would mean at least that the
mail merge and Word are not the culprits.
