HP 4p scanner

I thought that I might be the only one left with a 4p until I ran
across a posting that was only two weeks old. Usually when I'm
looking for help and find a website that might, the last posting was
usually 6-7 years ago.

So, let's see if I've got this right. HP website is not supporting 4p
for XP but I understand that DeskScan 2.9 will run on it?

I've been running 4p on a Win98 with the orginal ISA SCSI card.
Several years ago I built a new computer and to use my SCSI I found a
mobo with an ISA slot. It is a RAID mobo with ATA100 HHD interfaces.
I didn't know at that time that meant SCSI. So, I was getting address
conflicts; I changed the scanner address several times but no luck.
(Device manager showed 2 SCSI allocations, so I tried 3 and 4.} The
other day I got to thinking that the system can handle 4 HHDs and the
system had reserved them. Any thoughts on this?

I have upgrade the system to XP Pro; that is when I found out the HP
software wouldn't work.

If I get things straigthened out, should I keep using the original
SCSI or go for a PCI one? Would the 2409 allow me to use my present
cable?

I don't know the 4p, but I'm running an old HP IIcx SCSI scanner on XP
Home, no probs with the DeskScan 2.9. I've now run this scanner on
Win3.1, 95, 98, and XP.

If XP sees the SCSI card, it will load drivers, but the old proprietary
card might be a no go. Then again, I don't know anything about that mobo
you're using. I'm using Adaptec 2930 card (PCI). It has the HD
connector, but I'm running that to a Nikon film scanner first then a HD
to 16 pin cable to the flatbed. I assume your old flatbed is the 16 pin
cable (the one that looks just like a parallel port connector) and the
2409 card is the same? If so, should work.

You DO have to load ASPI however, as XP does not have it built in like
Win98 did.

I just used the Force ASPI thing rather than the one offered by Adaptec.

I've never heard of Mobo RAID controllers either.. but, it appears to
be like the Promise Raid adapters- which are NOT standard SCSI
controllers. The mobo looks like it's for standard ATA100 5400RPM IDE
drives (40pin).

And your ISA scsi card is legacy... If I'm not mistaken, ISA is not
supported on 2000 or XP. The scanner itself is essentially a digital
camera... Windows doesn't necessarily need to recognise the scanner as
an actual scanner or camera - especially with SCSI only devices. The
reason is because SCSI requires ASPI Twain / or ISIS. If you're running
ASPI twain drivers to allow your application to communicate with the
scanner, you should be able to disable the scanner in device manager
and still run the scanner without affecting performance.

This isn't guranteed to work. I can only speak for all the Fujitsu
scanners manufactured since the late 1990's. If the HP your HP doesn't
support 32bit twain and you're not able to locate a subsitute on
www.twain.org, then the scanner wouldn't be cost effective to run on
2000 or XP because of the necessary upgrades needed.

Don't overlook your basics. SCSI connected to a PCI SCSI controller or
a USB exchange adapter. I wasn't sure about anything with a model #
2409 but if you're referring to an Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller,
there's 2 tyes of external channel connectors that you may have. The
2940 usually has a 50pin high-density connection on te externa channel
but, there's also a 2940U2W which has a 68pin (or SCSI III )
connection.

The same rules apply with xp as with Windows 98:
* need a valid connection to scsi controller
* scsi chain doesn't excede 3m (passive)
* if your scanner has 2 scsi interfaces, make sure you've terminated
the scanner
unique scsi ID (SCSI controller defaut is ID7))
* Update / Install ASPI 4.71 or higher from the Adaptec site
* install Twain

And even though Windows doesn't have to see the device as "an Imaging
Device" in device manager, it should still properly read the firmware
of the scanner (identify HP ,,, product ID).

Hope this helps...

I've been running SCSI I/II/III [C36/D25 and HD50/HD68] on external or
internal components since the Apple II/Commodore 128 days, and still run
SCSI for a legacy film scanner [Minolta DSM II]. Until 6 months ago I was
running W2Ksp4 on a combo PCI/ISA mobo, the ISA slots for the scanner and
a high functioning modem. Now the SCSI is on a PCI card on another mobo.
So W2K does recognize SCSI on ISA or PCI slots.
I have upgrade the system to XP Pro; that is when I found out the HP
software wouldn't work.
XP abandoned ISA, for both Home and Pro versions. W2K will soon enough
be cut loose by MS, but for "now" MS is still doing security patches.
Consider this an alternative to wholesale hardware substitutions.
If I get things straigthened out, should I keep using the original SCSI

Your current cable is D25 male at both ends, yes? Not the orphan
Amphenol/Centronics 36 edge end? C36 terminals and ISA cards have no
support anywhere. The DB25 is what PCI standard Adaptec and clone SCSI II
cards expected to connect with their DB25 panel terminals. The CompUSA-
type retailers don't stock SCSI stuff anymore, so search elsewhere for a
PCI card of style AHA2906 (+/--) model, with a AIC7850 (+/--) controller
chip. The external connection of DB25 is what you need to match; the
ubiquitous AHA2940 (your "2409" a mis-type?) in its many variants had an
external HD50.
