HP 4280 "Out of Memory"

I replaced a working fine Lexmark X1150 print, scan, copy (broken paper
tray) with a new HP 4280 print, scan, copy, and all I get trying to print
from MS Works 4.0 using Windows XP is an "Out of Memory" message. I have 640
meg, and system information shows 422 meg available. Installation went
perfect. It WILL print OK from Quicken 7.1.

I called HP support. A recording says they no longer support the HP 4280,
which is 6 days old. Microsoft has no plans to update their printer driver -
tough luck, new printer owner. HP on line automated service suggests I try
installing an "alternate" driver, one for their Deskjet 550 C. I'm reluctant
to try this.

Wouldn't it be nice if Corporate America was interested in their product
working and customers being happy instead of making "liar loans" to people
who can't afford them? The big shots make 20 million/year by ripping off
those who can least afford it. It's called "free markets" - free to get rich
on the backs of the poor.

On another BB location this same problem was reported by someone else. No
solution has been provided there.

I don't know where you bought the c4280 6 days ago; perhaps you should
go back there for support (or return). As near as I can tell from the
HP site, that's a discontinued product (which squares with the recording
you received). According to cNet, the c4280 was released in May 2007.
With the pace of consumer electronics these days, it's not surprising
that it's been discontinued and replaced. Yes, it's annoying that HP
doesn't offer phone support for a product that came out only 19 months
ago, but what do you expect for a low-end AIO?

Windows error messages are not always as clear as mud. What other
applications are running when you try to print from Works?

Online HP support (I didn't see a suggestion re installing an alternate
driver, so I'm not sure where you were looking) --
