HP 1400 all in one series

I have an HP 1410 Print/scan machine.
I downloaded the driver HP calls for on their site, it's huge.
After installing, at every reboot, I get an error, Can not complete
installation.
The printer driver is unknown.
Is there a different driver or procedure to make this thing work?
I have XP professional on a P4-2.53Ghz/1GB RAM and 40GB HDD space available.

They say the driver package on their website should work.
It doesn't.
I have downloaded it 3 times to make sure it wasn't a corrupted d/l.
I have removed it, reinstalled several times, even using different usernames
and the admin account.
Still no joy.
