Howcome when i add things to startup, they don't start up normally

I used the startup control panel thing to add a program to startup. I want it
to start up THE EXACT SAME WAY that it would start up if i double clicked on
it. Only, i'm not double clicking on it. When i add this program to my
startup using the startup control panel, it doesn't appear in the task bar
like it would if i started it manually. even if i do ctrl alt del, it says
its running but when i click on switch to, nothing happens

To make a program start automatically, either use a function within the
program if available OR place a shortcut in the 'startup' folder

Double click 'My Computer'.. double click on the boot HDD icon.. double
click on 'Documents and Settings'.. double click on 'All Users'.. double
click on 'Start Menu'.. double click on 'Programs'.. double click on
'Startup'..

OK.. enough double clicking.. drag the icon into this folder that you want
to start automatically.. a note here.. when creating the shortcut, make the
choice as to whether you want to start the program 'maximised' for instant
use, or 'minimised' for running quietly in the background..

Close all of the windows, and then reboot your machine..
