Ensure the XP built-in firewall is disabled as it is only intended for direct connections to the Internet. Then you need to make sure each computer has a different computer name and the same workgroup name. The default workgroup is MSHOME. Then you can easily enable File and Printer sharing and share your desired disks and/or folders. To enable File and Printer sharing, right-click on "My Network Places" and choose Properties. Then right-click the Local Area Network Properties and check "File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" checkbox. To share your desired folders or disks, right-click a folder and then select "Sharing..".
You could run the XP Network Wizard, and if you do run the Wizard, make sure you tell it to connect through a Residential Gateway (Router).
