Her usb port is not enabled as win98 does not support usb, so she can't
use a usb cd burner

effectively.

Tried to compress files (18 meg compressed) and send it via ftp or

Win98 SE supports USB.

The simplest method is probably to compress her files into
18 separate .zip files and send one file at a time by EMail.

There is an overall issue here. Your friend does not appear
to believe in backing up her important files regularly. Sooner
or later she will face a disaster - this newsgroup deals with
them regularly. A 2.5" hard disk in an external USB case
would be low-cost but highly effective backup medium.

If there are serial ports on both computers, you can use the "file and
settings transfer wizard" in XP to transfer files through a "null modem"
cable.

I had the same problem and used email attachments to Xfr files smaller
than 10M and found several no-charge web-based options that did the job
on those files larger than 10M. You just upload from the old 98
computer to the site and download from the site to the new XP machine.

One is www.streamload.com, but the 'FRE' service limits you to 100M of
downloads/month, 10M at a time.

Another is sendthisfile.com which can handle any size file and worked
quite well.

The last is www.storeandserve.com.

All are faily easy to use, but do read everything that
storeandserve.com tells you. Uploading large files can sometimes be a
little slow on sendthisfile.com, but it does get the job done.

Hope this helps.
