Transfer files from a Win98 PC to different XP PC

Get me pointed in the right direction:
What's the easiest way to xfer files from my old Win 98 PC to my new XP
PC. My old 98 PC does not have a CD burner or USB ports. Can I quickly
create a two PC network if they both have NIC cards? If yes, how do I
do it. Through a hub? Direct NIC-to-NIC cable. What utility would
allow the old PC to be seen by the new PC?

The former is what I'd like to know how to do. Other options: I guess I
could also take the old hard drive and install it into the new PC and
xfer the files, but would there be a problem if the old HD was
formatted in FAT32 vs NTFS on new PC? Or, I could temporarily install a
CD burner in the old PC and burn the files and then xfer them to the
new PC.
Your thoughts?
Thanks

The most trouble free less involved way is to slave the drive to a
device in your new machine and copy all of the files that
way..........Formats not a problem.

Yes.

No hub is needed. Just be sure to use a crossover cable, not a regular
ethernet cable.

None. Everything you need is built into Windows XP. See

No, none at all. Windows XP can read any and all combinations of NTFS,
FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32, regardless of what file system it itself is
installed on. This is a very good way to do it.

Or, I could temporarily install
a CD burner in the old PC and burn the files and then xfer them to the
new PC.

You could do that too.

Two other possibilities.

1. E-mail them from the old machine and read the E-mail on the new one.

2. Use a USB thumb drive

If you use the CD/DVD cable or IDE port, you don't have to mess with the
jumpers.
Or you could buy an external enclosure.

You're welcome, but if you're posting through Google Groups, let me give you
some advice, if you don't mind.

Google Groups is a great tool for searchingthe groups for particular posts,
information on a prior subject. But, like any web-based posting tool, it's a
poor way to actively participate in the newsgroups. Do yourself a favor and
switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows.
