How to use Rules and Alerts to 'link' ssearch conditions

Can anyone help me understand how to join search conditions within a single
rule as opposed to having to write multiple rules? I'd like to set a joined
condition with a rule that would look at new email arrivals where an OR
condition exists. For example, I'd like to write the following joined rule:
"from people or distribution list" OR "with specific words in the
subject". Thanks for any help. -Paul

That would require two separate rules.
