How to use Out of Office if no Exchange Server?

Hi guys, I've been trying to tell a friend how to set up an Out of
Office reply in her OL2002, but can't even get it working in my own
2007 because according to the help file, you need an Exchange Server
to use this facility. Surely not?! How do normal home users set up out
of office messages when they don't have an exchange server? There is
no "out of office assistant" under Tools, and when trying to set this
up manually through Rules and Alerts, there is no option that allows
you to reply to messages.

I have suggested she uses her ISP's vacation message system, but she
doesn't know her password and to be honest, resetting this will cause
difficulties for her in Outlook and I'm trying to keep things as
simple as possible.

This friend is heading out of town in 12 hours and is counting on me
to get this sorted for her - she is VERY computer-illiterate. I am not
very Outlook-literate but she still comes to me for help. Please help
me help her?

If there is no exchange, and her machine is not running, then there is
nothing to respond to incoming emails with an Out of Office reply. Not sure
about 2002 but in 2003 you can specify a rule to reply to all incoming
emails. Of course, you have to leave outlook running on your machine whilst
away.

Then get her to ask the ISP what the password is!!!!!!!

How do normal home users set up out

Outlook is designed specifically for a corporate environment. Outlook
Express is the "normal home user" email client.

If she's getting mail from he ISP via Outlook, then clearly she knows her
password, since she had to have entered it when configuring her account.

If she can't recall it, there are scads of password-finding tools available.
