I am the default PC administrator for my elderly father's
PC running XP. I am on cable, but he is on a very slow
dial-up connection. Does anybody know if I can, or how
to, update his XP from a disk that I can download from my
faster cable connection and burn to a CD? In essence, is
there a master set of files that could be downloaded to
disk and then used to update another computer?

This would save a lot of hassle and many hours of
download time. He is running the original release of XP
and has virtually none of the updates.

Thanks,
JK, Toledo

Yes - just use the Windows Update Catalog to choose the downloads you want
to store them locally and then burn to CD.
Just go to Windows Update
On the left hand side select Personalize Windows Update
select - Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also
Save Settings and you can now access the Catalog

Most important thing to get first is Service Pack 1a.
You need to download the Network Installation Version
from
