How to 'unprotect' shared document for personal use?

How can I 'unprotect' a copy of a doument pulled from a central repository so
I can modify it or run Spell Check on it's contents if it is only for my
personal use? I am not trying to change anything on the master file or
document.

Just open it from the master copy (is it a *.dot template?) and then use
"Save As" to save a copy to your hard drive. If you put it on your desktop
or in MyDocuments, you won't be able to change the original. Then unprotect
the file (Tools - Unprotect Document) and do whatever you need.

It was saved as "Read Only" by a former employee and now no one knows how to
change it. I had followed your process already but stepped through it again
'just to be sure'... same results.

But thank you for taking the time and effort to try to help me! Most
appreciated!
 
Try opening a new document and use Insert > File.
