Document protect/unprotect - won't stay unprotected!

I've created a reasonably simple form using plain old text form fields
and check box form fields. The document has been protected. Over the
last few months, I've unprotected it on many occasions to make
modications per user requests and then locked it again.

I now want to unlock it and leave it unlocked. I can click on Tools
-->Unprotect Document. I enter the password and it's now successfully
unprotected. I can save it and then close it. I am not prompted for
any protection or password upon saving and closing, so it should still
be unprotected. Right?

However, when I open it again, it's still protected and I have to
select Tools-->Unprotect Document and enter the (same) password to
unprotect it.

Save and close....cycle repeats over and over.

Any ideas why the unprotect won't "stick"?

Thanks,

This is not built into Word. I have an Add-In macro on my system that
protects any unprotected document that is opened and contains form fields.
Otherwise the protected state is what it was when the document was last
saved.

Note, you should be using a template rather than a document for what you are
doing.

What you are talking about is what Word calls an "online form." For more

It is a template.

Not sure what you mean by "This is not built into Word"? I'm not using
any macros in this template all, just form fields and the standard
Protect/Unprotect available from the usual toolbar.

The form works beautifully as designed, I just need to know why it
won't stay unprotected.

Just to clarify, that's my understanding of how it should be, too, but
it isn't doing that.

I'd have thought so... Are you doing anything else in the document?
Sometimes, Word won't save any changes if one hasn't edited the text.
Try typing a character, then pressing Backspace. Now save?
However, when I open it again, it's still protected and I have to
select Tools-->Unprotect Document and enter the (same) password to
unprotect it.
