I have been told how to unlock a field in Word 2003 but what is a field?

(field: A set of codes that instructs Microsoft Word to insert text,
graphics, page numbers, and other material into a document automatically.
For example, the DATE field inserts the current date.)

A feature that can be inserted into a document by selecting Field from the
Insert menu.

Doug has provided you with the definition of "field" that you could have
found in Word's Help file. The keyboard shortcut to unlock a field is
Ctrl+Shift+F11, which you could have found in the Help topic "Lock or unlock
a field," which is the first hit when you search Help for "unlock field."

The fact that you want to know how to unlock a field without knowing what a
field is suggests that this is a homework question. I suspect that your
instructor expected you to use Word's built-in Help capabilities before you
asked anyone else.
