I'm trying to read an Acrobat pdf file on some hardware installation,
but the checkered background makes it difficult. Please tell me how to
turn this background off. Thank you.

If you have opened the PDF file in Acrobat reader and see that there is a
background pattern: sadly there is little you can do.

You can buy Adobe Acrobat [full product and not just reader] that will allow
you to copy a selection and paste it into a word docment, generally this
would eliminate any background shading.

The solution is:

Edit / Preferences / Page Display / then de-select: [ ] Show transparency grid
